"Mom-ism Monday # 3: Thrift shop stop, DIY projects, Making laundry soap, and Garlic!

It's been a week end of special very beautiful feast days! I love the feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Sunday we celebrated the feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul.
I hope that you are well and happy and enjoying the summer thus far. Prayers for the folks in tornado areas.

    1) In case you haven't seen my recent post about my newest television series on EWTN called "Catholic Mom's Cafe" premiering this fall, you can see it here. I am excited to report that we finally have dates for the series. It was filmed about a year ago. I hope and pray that the new series for Catholic Moms (and GrandMoms) will serve countless people. I'll keep you posted about fun contests and prizes as we get closer.

    2) What are the nine things in your refrigerator that you need to throw out? Check out this article. You might be surprised.
It's a good time to think about food safety now that summer is here. I am especially careful when grilling at barbecues. I am always cautioning my husband or oldest son (I know, I can be a pain about it!) not to use utensils on cooked foods that might have raw meat juice on them. I wash the utensils a few times during the grilling.
Also, please don't ever place grilled cooked food on plates that had contained the raw burgers or other raw meats, fish, or poultry prior to grilling. Not to put a damper on this post, but sadly, people have died of various food poisonings (e-coli, salmonella, etc) because of carelessness and accidentally contaminating foods with raw foods (meats, poultry, etc). We need to be mindful of food safety especially in hot temperatures.

    3) On a happier note, my daughter came home for a visit again! She'll be home longer this time. Part of the reason I am late in posting my "Mom-ism Mondays" is because I had to get her from the train from NYC and then we got busy with doing a few errands.

We made a stop at the local thrift store and I bought three sweet glasses for fifty cents each!

Here in my china cabinet--the green one on the left.
The light blue "hour glass" shaped one to
the right of the green one, and the cool shaped light
green one on the right--50 cents each!

My daughter Jessica was in the Do It Yourself mood when she got home so our kitchen smelled of pretty scented candles as she busily melted and poured hot wax and mixed lovely scents into unique glass containers she bought at the local thrift shop on our way home from the train. It looked and smelled like a candle factory!

Bowl of shaved wax, candle scents, various candle containers
bought at the thrift shop, and wicks

    Finished candle in Jessica's bedroom

Another finished candle in Jessica's bedroom. Isn't it pretty?
(Don't worry, she's in her late twenties and can handle candles and matches!)

We were getting low on our liquid laundry detergent which we had made some months ago so Jessica decided to make some of that too! We made six gallons of laundry detergent!

Our ingredients minus the large bar of laundry soap.
I forgot to take a photo of it before
it was used up in our laundry detergent making!

    Mixing the ingredients

Working on breaking down the soap

Hot steamy beginnings of laundry detergent

3 gallons so far in this pic. It gels overnight and is
then diluted with water to double the recipe

Here's the laundry detergent recipe we use:

4  Cups - hot tap water
    1  Fels-Naptha soap bar*
    ½ Cup Borax

    Directions:

-Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.
-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.
-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)
-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.
-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.
-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

    You can see more here.

And on the outside of the house...

    About 260 organic garlic plants!

My scapes on my organic garlic plants are ready to harvest. Taking the scapes off the garlic plants allow the energy of the plant to go to the garlic bulb rather than the flower that is trying to bloom on the top of the plant. Without the scapes, the garlic will then grow another month or more under the ground for harvesting late summer.

Scapes are really good in pesto sauce. So, I know what my daughter and I will be making tonight for dinner. I'll post a recipe of our pesto sauce soon.

On another note, I'll be WAY down at the bottom of Texas in August participating in a "Marian Summer in South Texas" and again in October. Here's news about the August event.

    IT'S YOUR TURN!

    Today's Reflection

From Catholic Mom's Cafe for June 25th:

    PONDER:

True love causes pain. Jesus, in order to give us the proof of his love, died on the cross. A mother, in order to give birth to her baby, has to suffer. If you really love one another, you will not be able to avoid making sacrifices.~Blessed Mother Teresa

    OFFER:

Again and again, Blessed Mother Teresa lets us in on that secret of love--the suffering part. Moms are well aware of the toil, tears, and sweat that go into their homemaking; but we must not forget to count the joys and satisfactions amid the difficulties. Ask God for the grace of his joy today.

    PRAY:

Lord Jesus, grant me your graces. Mother Mary, open my heart to love. Act of Love, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

    SAVOR:

Love and sacrifice intertwined brings solace and spiritual growth to my family.

    How observant are we?

How much do we take in? Are we watching everything? Our kids are, that's for sure. They are very observant and they should be. That's how they learn. And, because they are in tune to so much around them, it's a very important reason for parents to shield their children from the harmful parts of our culture.

    Angie's beautiful children

Angie, a mom I know shared with me recently that she came down with a virus and ended up with laryngitis. She said, "I have to whisper in order to let my vocal cords heal, so all the kids are whispering back to me. It’s very quiet. The Lord is showing me just how much my children mimic me! What a task He has trusted me with, to raise these children!"

Did you catch your kids mimicking you recently? Would you like to share about it in the comment box and receive an instant discount on Catholic Mom's Cafe book? It's easy. Just leave your comment and then email me at: DMCOBoyle[at]aol[dot]com and I will email you the code to get the book.

I pray your day is filled with joy as you observe all of God's wonderful blessings around you!

    God bless you and yours!

    Following Mother Mary's Steps

Following Mary's steps in hope, faith and love

Jesus' mother was a model of a woman trusting in God; a beautiful example for mothers in times of trial and of joy

    By Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle - OSV Newsweekly, 5/12/2013

Every year when Mother’s Day rolls around, many mothers pause to thank God for the blessing of their children, perhaps even in a bigger way than they usually do each day.
When mothers find it difficult to trust God,
    they can draw on
Mary’s faith, hope and love as guidance. Shutterstock

After all, Mother’s Day is a special occasion set aside to celebrate mothers. In my case, I’m blessed with five children on Earth and three in heaven.

At this time of year, when I look at my lilac bushes ready to burst into bloom, I can’t help but remember my mother and reminisce the bountiful fragrant lilacs that lined our back yard when I was growing up. My grandmother was a part of that picture, too — she was always nearby and beaming with a grandmother’s love. We all spent many a spring day out in the yard together.
My mother, Alexandra Mary Uzwiak Cooper, was born in the springtime of 1920. But for a few minutes after she let out her first cry the doctors and nurses weren’t sure whether she was a boy or a girl because she was extremely tiny, weighing only one-and-a-half pounds. But just as soon as they could determine that she was a girl, my grandparents requested that the hospital chaplain baptize my mother on the spot. They wanted to be sure that she would have her “ticket to heaven,” should she not survive.
As diminutive as my mother was, when the sacramental water of baptism was poured over her petite head, she was immediately initiated into the Church and received the great gift of the theological virtues of faith, hope and love.
My grandparents had surely been using and living their theological virtues — having had faith in the transforming sacrament of baptism, hoping in God that their tiny baby would survive, and loving my mother endlessly as they cared for her physical and spiritual needs.
My mother indeed lived to tell the tale, the theological virtues blossomed in my mother’s heart and soul, and she grew up and married. Through her openness to life she bore eight children of her own, passing on the virtues.

    Hoping, praying, loving
Mothers receive no guarantees regarding the little lives they “sign up” for by opening their hearts to their Creator with their “yes” to life. Yet a mother’s heart always remains hopeful and she puts one foot in front of the other each day in faith to love and provide for the children God blesses her with.
    Heartening Words
“We would like to pay homage to all brave mothers who dedicate themselves to their own family without reserve, who suffer in giving birth to their children and who are ready to make any effort, to face any sacrifice, in order to pass on to them the best of themselves ... How hard they have to fight against difficulties and dangers! How frequently they are called to face genuine ‘wolves’ determined to snatch and scatter the flock! And these heroic mothers do not always find support in their surroundings. On the contrary, the cultural models frequently promoted and broadcast by the media do not encourage motherhood. In the name of progress and modernity, the values of fidelity, chastity, sacrifice, in which a host of Christian wives and mothers have distinguished and continue to distinguish themselves, are presented as obsolete. As a result, a woman who is determined to be consistent with her principles often feels deeply alone, alone in her love which she cannot betray, and to which she must remain faithful.”

    — Blessed Pope John Paul II from his homily at the 1994 beatification of St. Gianna Beretta Molla

Some mothers have never held their precious babies in their arms because they were lost to miscarriage. Others have only been permitted fleeting moments to hold and kiss their babes born with serious birth defects before they passed on to eternal life. As well, some mothers suffer the pain of losing their baby when he or she is stillborn. None of this makes them any less of a mother in God’s eyes nor should it in ours. They have sacrificed for their babies and love them dearly. Blessed Pope John Paul II called these mothers “heroic.”
Three of my children were miscarried. I chose to hope that they were carried by the angels to the arms of Jesus and Mary. One of my pregnancies was very precarious, requiring that I stay still on complete bed rest for almost all nine months. When my doctor told me that I would most likely lose this baby, too, I chose to hope and pray instead, even asking Mother Teresa, whom I knew at the time, for her prayers.
Mother Teresa sent me a blessed miraculous medal and instructed me to wear it and to ask Mary to take care of the baby and me. She told me to pray, “Mary, Mother of Jesus, be a mother to me now.” I really like that key word “now.” That sure was when I needed her help. I clung to hope and had faith that Mother Mary would see me through — and she did! That baby is now almost 22 years old and is named Mary-Catherine.
    Mother Mary
It was only appropriate to pray to Our Blessed Mother, for she lived the virtues of faith, hope and love in an exemplary way. Even as a young Jewish girl, Mary prayed and hoped for the Messiah, having complete faith that God would keep his promises. She had no idea at that time though that she was to be the chosen mother of God.

Later on, Mary offered her courageous “Yes” to God when the Angel Gabriel announced to her that she would become Jesus’ mother (see Lk 1:26-29), having complete faith that God’s will would be accomplished through her.
A short time later, Mary’s loving heart sent her on a journey “in haste” into the hill country to help her elderly cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant as well (see Lk 1:39). We know that Elizabeth’s baby, St. John the Baptist, leaped in her womb upon Mary’s arrival. Elizabeth praised Mary for her great faith. Mary responded by praising God, glorifying him for his holiness, justice, and mercy through the humble words of the Magnificat.
When mothers experience fear in the circumstances that beset them or find it difficult to trust God, they can draw strength meditating on Mary’s faithful trust in God. And as mothers experience the deep joys within their vocation of mothering, they can feel an affinity with another Mother — one who has also experienced this profound joy in mothering Jesus.
Mother Mary was no stranger to unfathomable suffering and can help us with our intense sorrows, too. Let’s not hesitate to approach Mary in prayer often for support in our mothering.
She is much closer to us than we might imagine and is waiting for us to reach out to her in prayer. She will, indeed, bring us closer to her Son Jesus.
Mary, Mother of Jesus, be a Mother to me now.

    Global Traditions
United States: Mother’s Day is a national holiday celebrated on the second Sunday in May by remembering and celebrating mothers through gifts like homemade cards, flowers and breakfast in bed.
Australia: Second Sunday of May; cards and flowers for mothers and grandmothers. Carnations are worn by many — white to honor a deceased mother and colored for the living.

France: The last Sunday of May; a cake shaped like a bouquet of flowers traditionally is eaten after a celebratory dinner.

Mexico: May 10; a celebration of Mass is central and mothers often are serenaded to the tune of “Las Mañanitas.” Mothers enjoy tamales and atole.

Panama: Dec. 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Spain: The first Sunday in May; strongly linked to praising the Virgin Mary. Special church services for mothers and children often are held.

United Kingdom: Fourth Sunday of Lent, used to be called “Mothering Sunday.” Traditional rich almond cakes are made for mothers.

Comforting a sick friend or relative

So many of us have someone in our life who is very sick or maybe even dealing with a terminal illness. I came across this great list of ways to comfort a sick friend (or family member). Perhaps some of the ideas may be helpful to you.

27 ways to comfort a sick friend

We all want to be there when a friend or loved one needs us most. Why not step outside the box and use these creative ways to offer help, a boost or just some much-needed distractions?

Provide a dose of delight. Take a sick friend on an excursion to a “delightful place,” such as a botanical garden, nature trail, beach or forest preserve. It can be a soul-soothing experience.

For a friend who is seriously ill and housebound, drop off some food, books or videos, but keep your visit short so as not to tire them out.

Burn a CD of your friend’s favorite songs or a selection of soothing, tranquil music.

Organize a group care network for a sick loved one. Email a group of close friends and set up a rotating system for coming over and helping with household chores or caregiving.

Offer to help with the day-to-day stuff that needs to be done, such as a grocery trip, a Target run, doing a load of laundry, bringing home cooked food or walking the dog.

When you’re at the grocery store call your sick friend and say “I'm here what do you need?”  Or, “I have the kids after school... don't worry.”

Be a stable, reliable presence in your friend's life. Speaking calmly and checking in regularly can be a huge comfort to someone whose life has been turned upside down by a health challenge.

Keep in touch through regular emails or CarePages website postings. Say something.  Say anything. Let him or her know they are not alone.

Send a weekly care package to a sick co-worker. Set up a drop box on your desk and ask co-workers to “lend” their favorite magazines, DVDs, and/or CDs to help your colleague pass the time.

A plant or a small bouquet of flowers is always appreciated--even after the healing process of surgery, chemo or other illnesses has begun.

Offer to arrange child care at no cost to the family when an illness happens that involves small children.

A health crisis can create chaos in so many ways. Send over a cleaning service to clean the house and restore a sense of serenity and order.

Create a gift basket with fruits, granola bars, magazines, a deck of cards, candies, a package of thank you cards, stamps, a notebook and a pen.

Donate your frequent flyer miles or give an airline gift certificate to a family member of a sick friend who lives far away.

Send books, DVDs or CDs through Amazon to help a sick friend pass the time.

Send a box of seasonal fresh fruit through Harry and David to a friend who is recovering from illness or surgery.

Hire a manicurist/pedicurist to do a house call for a sick friend.

Buy a gift membership to an online DVD rental service so your recovering friend can receive movies through the mail. Gift memberships can be purchased for one month up to a year.

If your friend is bed-bound or in the hospital
for a while, send or drop off some soft, fluffy slippers, a soft bed pillow, lavender scented linen spray, wonderful pajamas, comfy socks, or foot massage cream to make them feel pampered.

Throw a feel-good get-together. Shower a friend with practical and meaningful gifts to help him or her get through a tough time, such as surgery or chemo.

Provide food for the soul. Organize a pool of cooks to whip up comfort food to give and share, and make sure you've got a team in place to create your own meals-on-wheels network.

Become the wheels. Offer to accompany your friend to his or her medical appointment.

Put together a get-well kit. Include bottled water, green tea, Kleenex, fruits, vitamin C, and a bundle of healthy remedies.

Provide healing hands. Massage can be a powerful tool for calming our psyches. Get your friend a gift certificate for a massage that can be redeemed when he or she feels up to it.

Empower your friend or loved one by providing them with a box filled with inspirational books, inspiring quotes and music.

Provide entertainment. Offer to take a sick friend to the movies. Or bring over a DVD, make some popcorn and watch a funny movie together.

Laugh, chat, and share as you normally would. Remember that a person is not defined by illness. They are still the same friend to you and want to continue to do their

part in the give and take of friendship.
